A chassis that sets standards – exclusively for the 996.
For us at Werk 96, it was clear: If we were to dedicate ourselves to the subject of chassis, we would do so without compromise – with the goal of developing the perfect setup for the 996. Because as fascinating as the model is, time has left its mark on the chassis.
The 996's production suspension dates back to a different era. Development began in the late 1980s, and the system went into production in 1997—and hasn't fundamentally changed since then. Even today's replacement shock absorbers are still based on this outdated technology. What was modern back then seems outdated today—especially when combined with modern tires, whose construction and carcass stiffness impose a completely new requirement profile.
In addition, the 996 was originally available with two factory-installed suspensions. The standard suspension was extremely comfortable, but when driven sportily, it was spongy, imprecise, and offered significantly limited feedback. The optional sports suspension, on the other hand, provided the necessary firmness for dynamic driving – but was simply too harsh for everyday use, on long journeys, or in city traffic. The crucial middle ground that meaningfully combines both worlds was missing.
That was precisely our mission: to develop a suspension that combines both poles – long-distance comfort and sporty performance – without compromise. Together with Klaus Heubach, owner of PEMAC and one of Germany's leading suspension experts, we took on this challenge. Over four years of development and thousands of kilometers of testing on a wide variety of roads and mountain passes across Europe resulted in the Werk 96 suspension – based on the KW V3, but with a completely new technical definition.
Only the housing of the original V3 remained. The entire internals – damper valves, rebound and compression configuration, high-speed and low-speed damping – were completely redesigned and precisely tuned to the characteristics of the 996. A key element: the patented KW valve technology, which we adapted to our needs in close cooperation with KW. This resulted in a setup that is unique – and available worldwide exclusively from Werk 96.
The result is a chassis with enormous range: comfortable on long stretches, precise and stable at high speeds, direct and confidence-inspiring in fast corners – without the harshness that usually comes with a sporty driving style. The damper operates sensitively, intelligently filters out bumps, and simultaneously offers maximum feedback – ideally matched to the axle geometry, weight, and handling of the 996.
This suspension isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. It's a tailor-made precision instrument for the 996 model—developed by specialists with passion and expertise, for drivers who truly want to experience their car.
